I'm a first timer using Clarifying Toner by Clinique. I bought Clinique 3 steps type number 2 for dry combination skin after consulting my skin condition with their BA at Clinique's Plaza Senayan Counter. There was a time when my skin was kinda dull and my skin tone is not balanced because I was not using any sun block or UV protection ( I know, I know, my bad, will not repeat it again). I had 200 ml of toner which cost me around IDR 350K (forgot the exact price).
Speaking of the packaging, I appreciated the hefty plastic and secure cover on top. You need to push and twist to open the bottle. Save to bring it on your bag while travelling.

Lets take a look what inside the toner (source: Paula Choice):
Water, Alcohol Denat., Glycerin, Salicylic Acid, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel), Menthol, Trehalose, Sodium Hyaluronate, Butylene Glycol, Citric Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Disodium EDTA, BHT, Phenoxyethanol, Benzophenone-4, Red 6, Red 33, Violet 2.
Well, I'm not familiar will all the ingredient but I spotted some which sound familiar for me. It was my fault by not checking the ingredients carefully. Try to avoid any alcohol for your skin. I was sold by BA's recommendation: the fact that this toner is enriched by BHA / salicylic acid. I have a knowledge that BHA can penetrate deep into our pores which makes it effective for reducing blemishes, including blackheads and whiteheads while AHA cannot do that. I was focusing on that and not aware of alcohol contained in this toner.
First of all, I hate the smell of alcohol. It penetrating my nose. Feels like I apply 70% alcohol directly to my face. I can feel a mild tingle on several spots. It does remove any excess or dead skin. I did double cleansing before and after swipe this toner, I still found dirty excess on the cotton pad. So it does exfoliate your skin, that's a good news. After application, it will refresh and tightening your face. Considering that after this toner you will apply Clinique DDML+, your skin should be back in hydrated and supple condition. I do think that it will works if combined with any kind of cream moisturizer.
By the time goes by, using this toner twice a day caused irritation on my skin and I decided to stop using it for a while. I majorly blaming the alcohol. I had major breakouts and have no idea why, was it because of Clinique 3 steps or other things. So I stop using both DDML+ and its toner. Perhaps because this alcohol based toner open up my pores too much and DDML+ clogged my pores OR the alcohol swipe away all oil on my face and triggering oil production at my pores. Anyway, I don't know the answer :( :( :(
